Even After the Proposal: A Guide to Engagement Sessions in Des Moines

As a Des Moines engagement photographer, one of my favorite parts of the experience is helping couples celebrate everything that comes after the proposal.

The excitement, the phone calls, the pictures of the ring... it's such an exciting season.

But after all of that, your story is just beginning.

One of the reasons I love engagement sessions so much is because they give couples the opportunity to slow down before wedding planning takes over. It's a chance to simply be together and celebrate this season of life without worrying about timelines or to-do lists.

Choosing the Perfect Engagement Photo Location

One of the first things I do after you book your engagement session isn't suggest a location, it's schedule a conversation.

I want to hear all about your story. How did you meet? What do you enjoy doing together? Is there a place that's meaningful to you?

Those answers help me recommend a location that feels like an extension of your story and not just a pretty backdrop.

Feeling Comfortable During Your Engagement Session

Almost every couple tells me they're nervous about being in front of the camera.

If that sounds like you, I've got some good news. You don't need to know how to pose.

My job is to guide you through the entire session so you can stop thinking about the camera and start focusing on each other.

The Best Moments Are the Ones You Didn't Plan

My favorite images are rarely the perfectly posed ones.

They're the laughs you didn't expect, the quiet glance between the two of you, the hand squeeze, you know, the moments that happen while you forget I'm even there.

Those are the photographs that tell your story.

A Few Tips Before Your Engagement Session

• Choose a location that feels meaningful and not just beautiful.

• Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

• Trust the process. You don't have to know how to pose.

• Most importantly, treat it like a date instead of a photo shoot. Laugh, talk, and enjoy this season together.

Because even after the proposal... There are still so many moments worth remembering.

If you're looking for a Des Moines engagement photographer or are planning engagement photos anywhere in Central Iowa, I'd love to help you tell your story.
